EmpowerLocal: The Business of Giving Back
Charitable giving is a philanthropic practice in which businesses, including small enterprises, donate funds, resources, or time to support local community causes and organizations. This act of giving helps small businesses connect with their community in several meaningful ways. It fosters goodwill, strengthens community relationships, and can lead to positive business outcomes. By supporting local charities, small businesses demonstrate their commitment to the well-being of their community, enhance their public image, and often receive increased customer loyalty and support in return. In essence, charitable giving is a win-win strategy that not only benefits the community but also contributes to the long-term success of small businesses by building trust and engagement with the people they serve.
Presenter: Tim Carwell
Tim Carwell, a seasoned Dane-zaa entrepreneur and a member of Beaver First Nation, is dedicated to community building and advocating for underrepresented groups. Drawing upon his expertise in technology and entrepreneurial ventures, he has effectively led The CommAlert Group of companies to success and growth across the country. Tim is actively engaged in numerous boards, committees, and mentorship programs, contributing his expertise to various professional organizations and institutions.
Tim leverages his professional and personal experience to support community safety and community-building initiatives. Tim consistently strives to unite people for the common good, emphasizing his First Nations heritage and contributing to Truth and Reconciliation efforts.
During the pandemic, he initiated projects to aid small businesses, such as a business continuity website and the "Pay It For U" campaign, which raised money for local businesses and honored front-line workers. In January 2022, Tim and CommAlert launched The Goodwill Project, providing a fully furnished office to a local small business with a two-year lease and internet coverage. He is actively involved in various community projects, including the creation of the Ohpinitotan Project for Indigenous youth in collaboration with NorQuest College.
His latest project is the largest to date and is poised to make the biggest impact. The Indigenous Cultural Centre of Excellence aims to create a comprehensive and inclusive destination for cultural preservation, healing, education, and tourism. The project will establish four facilities in metro-Edmonton, Calgary, Canmore, and High Level, Alberta."
