Government introduces legislation to support Canadians through recovery benefits and extend access to funds for emergency measures

On Thursday September 24, the federal government introduced legislation, which includes the previously announced Canada Recovery Benefit, the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit and the Canada Recovery Caregiver Benefit. If approved, the new benefits would provide income support to Canadians while promoting economic recovery. These programs, along with other previously announced EI changes, are part of the proposed packaged designed to replace the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB).

Speech from the Throne

On Wednesday, September 23, Canadians heard the Speech from the Throne, opening the second session of the Forty-Third Parliament of Canada. Government outlined its plan for a stronger and more resilient Canada, which includes creating one million new jobs, extending the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy into next summer, expanding the Canada Business Account to help with fixed costs, and accelerating the Women Entrepreneurship Strategy. This speech still needs to pass within Parliament, should that happen then government will be able to advance discussion and debate on the promises made; should it not pass then we will be faced with an election.
