Core Principles
Members must maintain the bookkeeping profession’s reputation and serve the public interest. Your conduct reflects on all of us. As a CPB Canada member, lead by example, foster ethical behaviour, and treat colleagues respectfully.
Integrity and Due Care
Work honestly, diligently, and fairly. Be truthful in all professional relationships and adhere to technical and professional standards.

Professional Competence

Confidentiality
Protect confidential information you gain through work.
- Don’t disclose information without permission from your client or employer.
- Don’t use confidential information for personal or others' gain.
- Take steps to secure information and protect against breaches.
Objectivity
Make impartial, unbiased decisions. Avoid conflicts of interest or undue influence. Clients rely on your objective expertise.
Member Responsibilities
Good Character and Duty to Report
- Cooperation: Respond promptly to CPB Canada communications, including investigations.
- Legal Conduct: Avoid illegal activities and notify CPB Canada of serious charges or convictions.
- Reporting Breaches: Report significant breaches of this Code by other members to maintain collective integrity.
Providing Professional Services
- Never produce or present false or misleading documents.
- Accurately represent your qualifications and designations
- Ensure that the compilation of financial statements complies with provincial regulations.
- Avoid conflicts of interest with clients.
- Avoid wrongful or criminal deception (fraud) intended to result in financial or personal gain.
Standards of Bookkeeping Practice
- Advertising: Follow the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards.
- Correspondence: Use your professional designation in professional correspondence.
- Client Files: Keep client files secure and separate from other records.
- Non-Members: Ensure employees or contractors abide by the Code.
- Privacy: Comply with privacy laws like PIPEDA and CASL. Have a public-facing privacy policy.
- Training: Maintain ongoing training for you and your team.
- Engagement Letters: Before starting any work, use a Letter of Engagement outlining responsibilities, scope of work, timelines, and payment terms.
Handling Errors and Omissions
- 1. Inform the client promptly.
- 2. Recommend they seek legal advice.
- 3. Advise them you may no longer act for them.
- 4. Report the claim to your insurer.
